Fabric Giveaway

Do you love fabric?
I do.
I think I mentioned that I have had the chance to work with RJR Fabrics.
I was given the fabulous opportunity to design a quilt for a new fabric line
ASANTE
And I was given the fabulous opportunity to make that quilt in a second line

WOODLAND
Which means
You all have the fabulous opportunity to win a set of fabrics from the same line!
Not ALL of the fabrics in the line, mind you, but 15 fat thirds and two one third pieces!
On Lori's site, she says,

"My passion for quilting is about people—the evocative stories told by quilts and the personal relationships pieced through the fabric.  I cherish these connections as well as the beauty that emerges through the patterns; they both soften and become richer over time."

Please leave a comment about a quilt you have made
and the person - the relationship - the connection
that you have made
through that quilt.

And for a little more inspiration, here is Lori herself:

1.  Lori - your new line Woodland, for RJR Fabrics, really has some unusual colors in the line.  They are a delight to work with!  What was your inspiration?
Well, it is a Fall/Winter line, and the subject matter was inspired by some of my findings on walks during the Fall months.  I knew I wanted at least one color combination to have that deep, rich maroon color.  The blue color combo was inspired by the dawn sky in crisp winter.  I live in the Pacific Northwest, land of the evergreens, so the third combination had to start there - deep forest green with the rusty-orange pop of deciduous trees turning color.

2.  Woodland.  I just have to ask...are you a hiker, rock climber, gardener, naturalist?
Hiking and mountaineering were a big part of my experience growing up in the Northwest.  My dad started us off at a young age going on hikes on the weekends, and as I grew older I never lost the habit.  The beauty found in nature has always been an inspiration to me.

3.  Everyone wants to know about two things - how you work, and of course, where you work.
When I ask how you work, I have to ask specifically do you work in silence or with music?
And when I ask where you work, what I mean is - do you sketch wherever you are, or do you sit down with all of your resources and then get to work?
My studio is located above a packaging company in northwest Portland, Oregon along with a handful of other artist's studios.  I usually carry a small camera with me in case there is something that catches my eye wherever I may be at the time - it could be something as simple as a fence, a leaf, or the side of a building.  I'm fascinated by patterns, especially those found in the natural world.  I also collect natural forms that I can scan or draw when I get to the studio.  When I feel like I've collected enough, then I sit down and sort through what I've got.  If I'm doing any sort of "figuring" or organizing of ideas, I usually need silence, but I love to sew to music.

4.  The holidays are approaching, you have a new line of fabric being released to stores - - will you take holiday guests to the quilt shops like a 'proud mom'?
Of course, who wouldn't!

5.  Speaking of the holidays, what are some of the secret family ingredients in your cranberry sauce?
Horseradish.

6.  Are you a morning person or a late nite person?
I would have to say somewhere in the middle, but my sweet spot for working is 9-noon when I've had my cup of tea and feel fresh.

7.  If you could travel anywhere in the world, and quilt with any one person for a weekend, not a class or anything, but just 'quilt weekend', where would you go and who would you want to quilt with?
If I could travel anywhere, I would travel back in time and spend a weekend quilting with my Granny Eva who died 12 years ago.  She was a true inspiration to me even though she didn't quilt. She was a sculptor, originally from Vienna, and she spent her entire life making art.  There were many unfinished works in her home studio when she died at age 80.  She never got to see my fabrics, but I know she would have loved to see them.

8.  Okay, I have to ask - speaking of travel...what is your favorite mode of travel?  Road trip in the Car?  A train excursion?  A quick jet to get there and get going?
I'd have to say a quick jet trip - I don't like to be stuck inside sitting down for too long - although I much prefer riding in a train than a plane.  Perhaps a high-speed train in Europe?

9.  Are you going to make any holiday gifts with your new fabric line?  Or are you on to the next line already?  Can you give us a hint?
Right now I'm making some beautiful place mats and napkin sets along with some tablecloths - they're really fun.  I've actually already designed Spring 2011 - production takes a while so we have to work ahead.  I think you'll all be happily surprised at the direction I took, but that's all I'm going to say - you'll have to stay tuned!

10.  It's hard to come to the last question, you know, that one last thing that you think people might want to know about their favorite fabric designer....let's see...okay.  I have one.
Cake or Pie?  Ice Cream or Chocolate?  Tea or Coffee?
I reject the premise that I have to make a choice!  Pear-Ginger Crisp hot out of the oven with vanilla ice cream and a cup of homemade chai

Thank you, Lori, for sharing so much with us!
We're inspired now.

I made a quilt for my daughter who lives in Chicago. Since I don't get to see her as oftern as I would like, she has a quilt to wrap up in and know that she is surrounded by her mom's love. I follow you via Google reader.

When my mother-in-law turned 80, I wanted to make a quilt for her with all the family names, birthdates and signatures on it. It was a great bonding experience with my stepdaughter who worked with me on the sewing and lettering. She learned to love sewing with that project. Kathie L in Allentown

Love those fabrics. One of my very best friends got married recently and so I made them a quilt for their wedding - they weren't super excited about registering for things and I knew it would be something that would last a long time.

Oh how gorgeous! I am imagining all sorts of quilts, table runners and bags made up with these lovely fabrics. I follow you through my google reader.

For our wedding shower, the ladies put together a yellow and blue "follow the yellow brick road" quilt. It was fun to see my cousins, who don't sew but have fashion sense, designing blocks and playing with fabric pieces. Thanks for the giveaway.

Recently I made two baby quilts. The people I made a connection to through those quilts are my mother and my oldest grandniece. My grandniece named every animal in the quilt, and asked me questions about what I was doing, and told me in secret that she wanted a princess quilt. Well, my mother is making that princess quilt! This is the first secret my grandniece told me, and it is enjoyable to sit and connect with my mother while she sews. Thanks for the giveaway. I'm a follower too.

I've been a follower for a bit now :)

When I make a quilt for a specific person I like to spend some time thinking about them and what they like. I find that it reconnects me with that person. I love looking for the little things that not everyone notices and then bring it into the quilt.

In 2003 my BFF celebrated her 35th wedding anniversary. I felt very strongly that I needed to make her a quilt. I did not get it done for her anniversary in September, but it was finished by Christmas. She really liked it, and enjoyed using it. I was so very glad that I followed my heart in making it, because Diana lost her battle with cancer and passed away the very next September. I still have a piece of the fabric used in her quilt. I still miss her very much.

I learned to downhill ski when I was 40 because my freshman son wanted to be on the ski team & an assistant coach was needed. I helped out for 8 years - when my son finished college he took my place. Now I support the team by making a quilt every year for them to raffle as a fund raiser - it brings in $2,000 for the team each year.

I just finished a traditional shoe fly quilt for my dear friend in Albuquerque. I hand quilted it so it took longer than expected but it worked out just beautifully. I met her 20 years ago during my brief stint at living in Albuquerque. She was a treasure then and remains a constant treasure in my life. Love you GG.

My Mom had both knees replaced earlier this year. I knew she'd be in the hospital for a while and she would need some comfort so I made her a small quilt, pillow and lavander eye pillow. She loved them and they made her feel more comfortable both in the hospital and as she continued her recovery at home.

What fun fabric and great interview! I have an online quilt group of about 45 women spread across the country - we all swap fabrics, blocks, and whenever there's one of us with troubling times, the rest of us make a quilt for her. Those are just the best!

Thank you for the opportunity.

I recently made a quilt for my 6th month old grandson. Lots of cutting! It turned out really cute and his mother even liked it.

Thanks for the giveaway. I made the crib bedding for my grandson. My daughter picked the theme, but didn't see the fabrics until the gift was delivered. It's great to make something that will be kept and passed on to the next generation.

I'm currently working on a denim quilt for my sn who is away at college. It's a simple quilt made from recycled jeans, manly enough for him and also quite rugged. Hwe can use it in his dorm or on those cold nights camped out for basketball tickets!! I plan on backing it with fabric with his school logo on it!

mascanlon said...

The inspiration...mu husband is an avid Oklahoma fan. He flies the flag every Saturday in the fall and wears all the gear. I found a set of machine embrodiered blocks with all the important motiffs, the sooner, wagon, the logo and insignia and made a simple quilt in the school colors. The look on his face was , as they say, priceless. It's nice to hit it out of the park sometimes!

A tough one. Recently I made a quilt for the first grandchild of my friend and hairdresser. Using leftovers from my own grandson's two quilts, which makes them quilt cousins. I like to put fabrics from previous quilts into successive ones to keep my quilts connected no matter where they go.

My first quilt was as a teenager. Some wonderful women taught me how to assemble the quilt top. My sweet mother tried to convince me into tying the quilt when we were done, but I wanted to HAND quilt that QUEEN sized quilt. Not being a quilter herself, she was wonderful to let my quilt take up her living room for a couple of weeks while we learned to hand quilt it together. Such a wonderful time and memory and I cherish that quilt!

I made a quilt for my dad for Christmas 2 years ago with nautical fabrics and backed with a print of sailboat blueprints. For a while he wouldn't use it because it was "too nice", but now he wraps up in it when the temperature drops and I know it's very appreciated!

I made my first quilt about 4 years ago - before my first daughter was born. I just picked up some on sale fat quarters and wandered around until I found coordinating fabrics. I'm an engineer, so I used some graph paper to "design" it and amazingly, finished before she was born. It lived on our bed through her early months, got pooped and peed on, and brough sunshine to our bedroom during some hard days - the colors are all bright and fun, and now that quilt is part of our family history!

A few years ago, my bee and I made a quilt for one of our members who was moving halfway across the continent. We covertly met to design the quilt and each of us made a block in the color scheme (pinks with chocolate brown secondary)> Then we put it together and we quilted it on my Handi-Quilter. She was in tears, and touched beyond words when we presented it to her at her going away party. Now we live a continent apart, but we email every day and count the time till we can quilt together again.

I had a long break from quilting once I started my family. Earlier this year though, my daughter and I were looking at some quilts on the internet and she asked me to make her a rag quilt. So we hunted for instructions on the internet and found lots of amazing things on the way which was really starting to whet my appetite for quilting again!! I needed a shopping trip as I had no fabrics any more and I was lucky enough to find some hot pinks and lime greens that I just knew she would love. So one weekend when she was away, I made up the quilt for her and placed it on her bed where I knew she would find it as soon as she came home. She squealed and uses that quilt every day still. It was a special gift for her that she adores and she gave me the gift of enthusiasm for quilting again.

My first quilting project was a pillow for my mom. She is an 11 year breast cancer survivor, so I chose pink ribbon print fabric, encouraging word fabric, and made the ohio star pattern since we're originally from Ohio. She has loved it so much, that she won't give it back just so I can correct one little side seam...It's a quick fix Mom, honest :)( I am a follower through Google reader.)

When my mom was still here, she made all the quilts, I just didn't have that kind of patience. I found a pattern for a watercolor quilt and my mom was going to make it for me. She was diaganosed with cancer and she just couldn't grasp that quilt, so I went and stayed with her and the two months I was there I made the top with Mom's help, we then started the hand quilting and when I went back home Mom finished my heart quilt and sent it to me. I made her the basket top she wanted but she passed before she could finish her quilt. My heart quilt is the only one that my mother and I made together and it is so special to me.
