Skip the Borders - ebook giveaway tour!

so glad you stopped by, because Jaybird Quilts is having book review blog tour
and it's an ebook giveaway, too!

by Julie Herman
this is a simple book review - great book, tons of information, great quilts to make
this is a book that you'll definitely want in your library
here's a peek at one of the two patterns I took on
I can definitely say "instant gratification"
(dearStella fabrics)
"Dot Dot Dash"

Julie asked us to answer just a few questions - here they are
All of the quilts in Skip the Borders are... borderless!
Do you skip borders on most of your quilts?
I DO skip the borders!
...on Civil War applique quilts,
on modern Hawaiian quilts,
and on the quilts I make for friends and family.

In the intro to my book I give you Permission to Break the Rules. Do you break some quilting rules? What is the number one rule you break and why?
There are rules???!?
I clearly break a lot of quilting rules.
Where IS this list of quilting rules?

It's no secret that I love binding! In Skip the Borders I included an entire chapter on binding. So the million dollar question is do you use bias or straight of grain most of the time?
I am a straight binding girl.
And more-so lately, a no binding girl.
(mitered facing, pillowcase turn)
Or should this issue be in question number two...

While Julie may have sent some questions for us,
I sent some questions for her to answer!
I thot you'd want to know more about the author
of this informative book.

what's your favorite fruit smoothie?
I don't drink fruit smoothies.
I don't drink many things actually.
95% of what I drink is water or apple juice.

what's your favorite junk food?
M & M's - Specifically Dark Chocolate Peanut M  & M's

do you munch while you sew?
Not really. I snack on the occasional break.
I do snack a LOT when designing and planning out my quilts.

and finally, what was the name of your first stuffed animal you received as a child?
The first one I can remember what a teddy bear
named Willie.
My mom gave him to me and I still have him somewhere!

here are a few of the quilts from Julie's book that I just had to share with you
"Floating Triangles"
"White Stars"

please remember, this is a blog book tour
and an ebook giveaway
to be a part of the giveaway
leave me a note - post a comment - and let me know about the last quilt you made
did it have a border?
and what kind of binding
did you use?

thanks again for stopping by....
natalie.

Love this book! My last quilt top has a border, and I'm going to bind it with solid red, straight edge binding.

My last quilt was for a friend's birthday and was a Thimble Blossoms pattern. Yes, it had a border (I usually prefer borders)...I bound it with bright fabric.

Jocelyn said...

My last quilt top has a border and will have straight binding at some point in time!

What a lovely book! I'd love to get my hands on it.My last quilt definitely had two borders, with blue and red in them. But I'm currently working on a Thimble Blossom pattern that I'm thinking of going borderless!

I love that book! My last quilt was a blog hop for Bowls with Borders. It did have a simple border, and mine needed one. I often don't use borders in the same situations as you. I use 'em when I need them, and don't when I can because I love that look.

I just finished a Raspberry Dessert from this book, and it has no borders. I'd love to win a copy to share with my guild.

I'm not a big fan of borders---binding is all I want! :) My last quilt didn't have any binding and I love it! :)

Barb in Mi said...

My last quilt was border-less and had a straight binding (hand sewn on back - unusual for me...). Love it and the photos of Julie's book make me want to see more of her neat designs! Thanks for a chance!

the last quilt i finished was a Christmas quilt! it does not have a border. i have several borderless quilts already so it isn't too much a stretch for me to leave it out. it's got a solid red straight binding.

Jenniffier said...

I am currently in the middle of finishing up two quilts, one has two boarders, the other has none. I usually make quilts with out boarders though, they seem to make me happier.
For binding I usually use a solid.

I've always been drawn to quilts without borders and most of mine now are without. I feel like I'm breaking a rule sometimes when I decide to leave it off and was afraid of quilters prison:0

Mary said...

My last quilt has an inner and an outer border, and straight binding. The quilt in progress has 3 borders and will have straight binding.

Carla G said...

My last quilt has no borders and I'm working on the straight binding. Thanks for a chance to win this fabulous book! :)

My last quilt did not have a border. It's really neat.

Thanks for the giveaway!

The last quilt I finished did not have a border. It was a baby quilt with lots of machine embroidery for my Granson

Sue said...

My last quilt had a border, but it was the same fabric as the background fabric. I bound it with straight grain binding.

Diann said...

I've got about 6 more inches of hand sewing down the binding on a Christmas quilt, so effectively it's done. The binding is straight grain as are most of my bindings. It has 2 borders.

My last quilt did have borders, but I have one in the planning stages that doesn't :o)

My last quilt did have borders. and straight binding.

My last completed quilt did not have a border...with straight of grain bindings

My last quilt had no border. It was a mini quilt so it just didn't seem right. I've never done bias binding!

The last quilt I made had a border with a beautiful french binding.
Thanks for the giveaway!

The quilt I am working on right now is a crimson/white houndstooth quilt for my uncle. I am pretty sure that it will have a small black border and a black and white binding. I'm not 100% certain of the border, though. I am excited to see how it turns out! :)

Kacey said...

my last completed quilt was a zig-zag quilt from Crazy Mom Quilts' tutorial. it did not have a border, and used straight grain binding in fun stripes :)

Ben_D said...

My last quilt had sort of a border, but it was really just an extension of the negative space. I used bias binding.

Gidget said...

Want this book!
I've been working on a baby quilt, it won't have a border. Also some baby clothes! Love to make little clothes....so fun!

Andrea R said...

The last quilt i made was chinese coins here:
http://quilti.com/daisy-jane-coins/

I really need to update that post or make a new one.. Hmm.

I bound it in straight- grain binding because that was all the bit of fabric I had left. The back was pieced so I didn't want to turn it.

Mommarock said...

Still working on it. No borders, and I will eventually get to the binding. I had to put it up as I just got a new puppy. I am working on a hand pieced hand quilted hexagon quilt. It has taken forever. Just when I am getting down to the end, I go and get a new puppy.. dumb.. So it is on a break while I work on a smaller piece.

Marlena said...

Love the book! My last quilt had 3 borders and had straight brown batik binding.

CarolT said...

My last quilt had no border and straight binding. Have never done bias binding.

My last quilt had 2 borders! Current one has none!
Straight grain binding, love stripes or dots.
Love Jaybird patterns!
Thanks

B Greene said...

My last quilt did have a border. The binding was straight grain and hand-stitched on the back :-) I love hand-stitching the binding - I think it is the "closure" aspect (both literally and figuratively).

NadineC said...

This book looks great, and I would love to add it to my library! I just finished a baby quilt, no borders, polka dot straight-grain double-fold binding, hand-stitched to the back.

I am finishing up on Vintage Holiday and yes it does have a border.I do like the look of quilts with no border.I have only made one.So I do need another pattern or so.

Shannon Wallace said...

My last quilt project was actually a panel, and because it was a panel, I was advised by my MIL to border it! It was my first time to put a border on a quilt! I bound it in some cute Thimbleberries apple themed fabric.

Kate Brown said...

borders on the last one and straight binding :)

I just finished quilting Julie's Ballerina pattern. No borders, and I will use a 1/4 inch straight grain binding.

Lora Martin said...

The last quilt I made does not have a border and it is bound with the same fabric I used as a focus in the quilt and for the backing.

Thanks for the chance to win the book.

Lucky Duck Dreams said...

My last quilt was a mini of a paper pieced block and I used a double solid border to frame it with a strip binding

Amanda said...

The last quilt I made did have a border. It was Julie's Carnival pattern in fact. I ended up using a straight of grain binding instead of a bias binding. I almost never use bias bindings since I hate cutting bias strips!

Rachelle said...

The last quilt I made was the Prism Quilt by Anna Maria Horner and doesn't have a border, just a binding. My first quilt didn't have a border either; it was self designed, big blocks with dinosaur applique. I had no idea what I was doing, but it still worked out ok.

Nancy said...

last quilt has no border and using straight grain binding. Love the book. nridder@hurontel.on.ca

The last quilt I made didn't have a border. The one before that had a border, and the quilt before that didn't have a border but did have sashing all around each block.

quiltzyx said...

The last quilt I finished is an art quilt with no borders & a non-bias binding. The last quilt TOP I've done has no borders...unless I decide that it needs to be a bit bigger. I need to put it on my bed to check the size! lol

Thanks for the chance to win a copy, this book sounds like one that I NEED!

Lee said...

I used a straight grain binding on the last quilt I made. thank you for the review and the book looks wonderful!

Beth said...

No border on the last quilt I made and use straight binding.

No borders on the last two quilts I made, and straight binding on both of them. Am binding some grandmother's flower garden blocks and am using bias binding for the first time. Love how it makes the points so much easier to do!

I put on borders with a hand-stitched binding. Thanks for the giveaway!

My last quilt did have a border but the one before that did not. I use double fold binding cut on the WOF and I stitch it down by hand.

Kathy H said...

The last quilt I made was for a king size bed and it did have a border. I added mor borders so it would be big enough. I do like your border less quilts, especially for a nice throw.

Delores said...

Julie's book looks soooo good - would love to win.
The last quilt I made was actually to be used as a tablecloth and I used my usual straight grain binding on it and yes, it did have borders (to make it large enough to fit the table).

My last quilt was a doll quilt and it did have a border. Binding...I always use bias double fold binding stitched down by hand. love the book.

My last quilt was a charity piece for our local VA hospital. It used some swap Amish buggy swap blocks, sashed in black, no border and was straight of grain bound from the back to the front.
The whole project was neat and clean, no muss, no fuss.

I am doing a no border right now.....on the quilt rack.I would love to have Julie's book.

Deb said...

All my quilts have had borders, but the last one I made was the Tetris quilt. My son nabbed it and asked for no borders!!

Julie said...

My last quilt didn't have a boarder, I like the patterns that emerge.

Nana Jo said...

The last quilt I made was a memory quilt made from sweatsahirts and Minnesota shop hop fabric. Yes, I did put a border on it because there weren't enough sweatshirts to make the quilt queen size without a border. The border brought the whole quilt together since the sweatshirts all had an outdoor theme.

Nancy Page said...

All the quilts I have done have borders. But I can see that I need to try no borders. Thank you for the giveaway.

Have a super great sewing and stitching day!

Carol said...

My last quilt did have a border and a straight of grain double fold binding. I really like striped bindings, especially diagonal stripes.

My last quilt was made with Salt Air charm packs and Kona natural. No border (I don't really like borders) and the binding was from Salt Air yardage. I think this book would be a big help to my quilting aspirations :-)

my last quilt had borders ; it was a scrappy stacked coin . The binding was straight cut . I have not done a bias cut binding yet !

Patty said...

The last quilt I made was a baby quilt and I did skip the borders.

Mary W. said...

I guess you could say my last quilt had a border that just happened to be the same fabric as the sashing. I used straight edged binding.

I'd love to win Julie's book so I can try one of her border less designs!

I am making a halloween table topper. Yep, it has a border and my binding is some crazy halloweenish stripe! :)

Ann said...

Last top I finished was similar to the white stars but I did put a border on! I probably run 50/50 on use of borders.

Jodi - usairdoll said...

Such beautiful quilts! Would love to have this book. Last quilt I made did have a border and the binding was made from scraps of the quilt, straight of grain I guess.

Thank you for a super giveaway and a chance to win.

On my most recent quilt I did some experimenting with the border. On one side, a line of flying geese. Across the bottom, a strip of gray.

My last (only 2nd) quilt was a flannel rag quilt so no border. Thanks for a chance to win!

supersara20 said...

My last quilt did have a border. I have to admit I really love borders but I keep trying to give them up! I guess it just depends on the project if I put one on or not. The quilt before last didn't have one. I use regular binding also and always machine mind it. I hate hand stitching.

Deb said...

My last quilt and the one I'm working on now, neither had borders. I'm finding that more of mine lately don't have borders. thanks
