Set the Table from Martingale

It is a
GIVEAWAY
blog
post!

if you read the last blog post
you'll understand why I am bursting with pride

Set the Table
yep, that's my name up there!!!

I thought I might make my own table runner
from the book
using some different colors than the ones shown
you know, something for the house...something for now...and something from
"mornings with Buddy"
color schemes
there is this burnt orange accent running around my house, so I started pulling all of my orange scraps
even pulling some leftover hexes that I had cut
then I threw in some blue, just any big contrast I could find

the key to the design that I did for this book
is to have a big color punch for the "sprinkle"
as I was working with the colors on the chair,
I noticed the heavy hand blown vases and the glass floats on the table
hmmmm.....beach glass colors
out came the greys and the great acid greens in Boho Vibe
which made me think about those new grey Kona cottons
mixed with Hoffman California Fabrics acid green yellow
(this would be a lot of good contrast, I thot)

and then it hit me
where was the orange that I started with???!?
there they were on the table with all of the new fabrics
for International Quilt Festival, Long Beach
august 2-4
maybe mostly turq and a little burnt orange would work for my summer runner

take a look at the book, and the projects
leave a comment
telling me which project you think I might have designed
(no cheating)
and which color scheme you like the best

and you will be entered in a random number generator drawing
one person will receive an e-book
copy of
Set the Table
thank you, Martingale!!

this week I will keep working on developing these color schemes
pop over to facebook or instagram
to take a look at my progress on this project

but leave your comments here on the blog for the giveaway

look for the blog post next week
let's say saturday the 20th?  afternoon?
to see who will be making their own new table runners from this fun book

It is New Quilt season.....

It's Spring

most of you think
flowers
furniture on the deck and bbq

but quilters?  they think

new quilt season!!!!

because I have been more absent than not
here at the blog
I thot I would let you in on where it is
that I have been

TikiTemple

I am lucky enough to live in Southern California
home of
Alexander Henry Fabrics
Anthology Fabrics
to name a few
and
I started thinking about this quilt design when I saw these Hoffman California Fabrics
but I wanted to test my idea
before cutting in to that great Liquorice Bali Pop
I grabbed a bundle of Marcia Derse that we have in the shop site
and started working on the pattern
this was just one layout
but a layout I decided to use to make this over sized runner
I didn't like it
until I quilted it
and added the black binding
and decided I could work with it
it was time to try the tone on tone batiks
I added the red
I took away the red
arranged the blocks in the second alternate layout
finally, I selected some bright
Robert Kaufman Kona Cottons
and sent them to a friend with some hand written pattern instructions
she got back to me with news that one piece was off by 1/2 inch
YIKES
bless her, she finished the quilt
and sent it to
for quilting
while I worked on the pattern illustrations and instructions
and waited for the quilt to arrive
so it could be photographed and the pattern sent to print

so next time you think spring
think new quilt season

and forgive us all for being just a little bit
absent

while we try to meet our Spring Quilt Market deadlines

...just take a moment.

I have been a bit raw of late...

you know, that kind of
tears welling up
at car commercials
kind of raw

not that I am all for stuffing your feelings, or putting a good face on it, either
because, after all
we all have our stuff

no one seems to walk that road alone
sadly, there is a lot of company on that road

so I have been taking a moment

but now it's time to focus on the glass half full
the great people that were in my class last weekend...

the moments of seeing an old dog friend with their face in the sun...

the daunting task of selecting just the right colors
from a Robert Kaufman Fabrics box of kona cottons

but for my friend and her son, who have lost their "rock" of a man in their life
I can only hope that the memories of the time they have spent together
will far outshine
the sadness of thinking of the future without him

and for those of you
who seem to be getting a bit too emotional over beer and Clydesdale commercials
it's okay
we all do it

take a moment to stop and listen to the morning song bird
sort your fabrics
just to enjoy the colors and the designs
stop to tell a dog that they are a good dog
enjoy the quiet of the snow, the rain, the fog, or the sun
and speak kindly to a stranger
just take a moment
